Chebeague
|
|
Chebeague is an Indian word that translates as 'island of many springs.' The island was settled by fishermen who built many large boats from the oak, pine and spruce timber that grew on Chebeague's well-watered soils. Many then went into the boat building business and Chebeague was famous for its stone sloops that carried granite products from many Maine island quarries. One island family that traces its roots back to the earliest days of island settlement, recently celebrated its 250th year in continuous residence on Chebeague.
